Tip # 98
(database) IMPORT FIELDS SELECTION SCREEN

When you are importing information from another database, you are allowed to select which fields from the database you are importing from goes to specific fields in Photo Jockey. There are 2 ways you can get to this screen.

  • Importing data for text comments
  • Importing data into Photo Jockey's database

The top left list shows what fields Photo Jockey is looking for. The list to the right of it contains a list of field names or field data, depending if the database file contains a first record that is nothing more than field descriptions. The list on the far right contains up to the first 1000 records from the database you are about to import. Just follow these easy steps to map the database fields to the correct Photo Jockey fields.

  • Click on a Photo Jockey field in the left list
  • Click on a field in the right list (This assigns where the data comes from)
  • Check/UnCheck/GrayCheck the field in the left list (Allows you to control the CASE of the imported text for the field)
  • Repeat the above steps for all fields in the left list

Once you have finished mapping the import fields to the Photo Jockey fields, the bottom list shows your current selections. You can still make changes if you decide you made a mistake. Once finished, click "Apply". If you want to cancel the import process, then click "Cancel". Clicking "Help" brings up this help topic.

HINT: There are 2 extra import fields always located above the actual import fields. For example: If you had an import data file with 4 fields (Category, Notes, Keywords, Filenames), then the import fields list would look like this:

  • [Not Assigned to import field]
  • [Blank Data]
  • [Keep Original Data Field]
  • Category
  • Notes
  • Keywords
  • Filenames

  • The top 3 are special so that as you are assigning/mapping fields, you could unmap them with the "Not assigned to import field". You could also elect to have a certain Photo Jockey field to be imported as blanks. In this case, choose "Blank Data". You could also elect to just import a few fields and not others by using the "Keep Original Data Field". That way if your database is the way you want it except for the Keywords field, you could specify that all fields except the keywords field use the "Keep Original Data Field". Very powerful.

NOTE: If you are importing Text Comments, then you will have only 2 fields to map/assign. These are "Filenames" and "Text Comments". The database file is read and for every filename found, it creates a text comments file. The text in the comments file comes from the imported database file. The text comment filename will be the same as the filename found in the database plus ".txt". So, if the import filename was "IMG102.jpg" the text comment file will be called "IMG102.jpg.txt".
